I visited Ms.Kyoko Mitsuhashi who is a master of KATAKOMON(Fine patterning). Ms.Mitsuhashi got married with some Fine Patterning artist but her husband passed away after 10 years from their marriage. So she started learn how to make Fine Patterning from husband's father who was a legendary artist and strict person(most of top artist is this type though). And her professor passed away too so now she's the last artist of this genre. This is her atelier(SAMPLE 1), she put a cloth on the long board in the middle and put a stencil(SAMPLE 2). Then glue resist dyeing. There are many type of brushes are hung on the wall(SAMPLE 3).

Ms.Mitsuhashi is the 5th generation of this Fine pattering artist family. 1st generation started their work as a dye shop for SAMURAI's wear first and started KIMONO and YUKATA(summer kimono) form middle of EDO period(about year 1700) and had been doing it for over 200 years. The 4th generation artist who is Ms Mitsuhashi's father in low was asked to make a new designed YUKATA which has an OKINAWA taste but has EDO flavor at the beginning of SHOWA period(around year 1930). So he made up a new style of fine pattering after many trial and error. He named the new style   "KATAKOMON".

Ms.Mitsuhashi showed me some books(SAMPLE 4) which were the list of all patterns of "KATAKOMON"(SAMPLE 5). There are over 20,000 patterns so these books are valued heirloom for Ms.Mitsuhashi(even for us as well).
